    Updated September 2026: every price, wattage, and warranty term below is re-verified against each maker’s own current page, and every accuracy figure is checked directly against the independent lab source that publishes it.

    The direct answer: the Anova Precision Cooker 3.0 is the pick, at $169 with a maker-published ±0.1°C accuracy spec and the only 2-year warranty in this group. The Instant Pot Accu Slim is the one to skip — it publishes no accuracy figure at all and its price can’t be pinned down from Instant’s own current listing. Two products here have never appeared in the independent lab test that gets cited for “accuracy” claims in this category, and that gap is worth more than any of the numbers on the spec sheet.

    What the Independent Lab Actually Tested

    TechGearLab runs an instrumented sous vide test — a water bath, a reference thermometer, a stopwatch — and its current published results cover three circulators: an Anova Culinary Precision Cooker Nano (0.29°F average error), an Anova Culinary Precision Cooker listed under the model number AN500-US00 (0.09°F average error, 55 minutes to heat a bath to 147°F), and a Breville Joule at 1100W (0.39°F average error, 36 minutes to heat). That’s it. Inkbird and Instant Pot circulators do not appear anywhere in TechGearLab’s published lineup, and neither AN500-US00 nor the plain “Joule” name is confirmed to be the exact “Precision Cooker 3.0” or “Joule Turbo” units sold today — Anova and Breville have both renamed and revised these lines since. A number attributed to “TechGearLab’s lab test” for an Inkbird or an Instant Pot circulator is citing a test that doesn’t include one.

    Street prices move, so here’s what each maker’s own page (or, where noted, an authorized retailer) showed at verification. Instant’s own product page didn’t display a price to a direct fetch; the most recent figure a named independent review site could confirm was roughly $80, well below the deal-tracker flash-sale price of under $30 seen on some listings — which is volatile enough that Instant’s real everyday price isn’t something this page can state with confidence.

    Layer in Anova’s optional subscription and the picture barely moves: opting into the $9.99/yr tier for three years adds $29.97 to the 3.0’s $169, for $198.97 — still under the Joule Turbo’s $249.95 sticker, and that’s the priciest possible Anova scenario against the cheapest possible Breville one. Skip the subscription, which Anova’s own page says you can do without losing device function, and the 3.0 undercuts the Breville by $80 outright.

    Anova Precision Cooker 3.0: The One With Nothing to Verify Twice

    The 3.0 earns the top spot for a boring reason: every number it needs to back up its price is published somewhere checkable. 1100 watts, a stated ±0.1°C tolerance, a 2-year warranty — the longest here by a full year over the other three — and an onboard touchscreen that runs a complete cook without the app or its optional fee ever entering the picture. Skip this if counter-drawer space is genuinely tight or $169 is more than you want to spend before you know you like sous vide — that’s what the cheaper Inkbird is for.

    Breville Joule Turbo: Best Hardware, Total Phone Dependency

    The Joule Turbo is the nicest object in this lineup — a compact cylinder with a magnetic base that stands upright in a pot on its own — and its Turbo mode genuinely speeds up the recipes Breville has tuned it for. But there is no screen, no button, no way to start or check a cook without your phone, Wi-Fi, and Breville’s servers all cooperating at once. Skip this if you want a physical fallback for the night your phone dies or the router drops, or if the $20 gap between Breville’s own price and Best Buy’s is reason enough to shop around before buying at either one blind.

    Inkbird ISV-100W: The Cheapest Number That Matches Anova’s, on Paper

    Inkbird’s ±0.1°C spec sits right next to Anova’s on the sheet, at roughly a third less money once the current site discount is applied, with on-device buttons that don’t require the app at all. The catch is that nobody outside Inkbird has published a number to check that claim against — it isn’t in TechGearLab’s lineup or any other instrumented test this page could locate, and the 1-year warranty is the shortest of the three brands that publish one. Skip this if an independently verified accuracy number matters more to you than a maker’s own spec sheet, or if you want the reassurance of a longer warranty behind the purchase.

    Instant Pot Accu Slim: A Dial, and Not Much Else to Point To

    The Accu Slim’s whole pitch is simplicity: a physical dial, no app, no account, nothing to subscribe to, ever. That’s a real feature for someone who wants zero smart-home footprint in the kitchen. It’s also the one circulator here with no published accuracy figure to evaluate and, honestly, no confirmed current price this page could stand behind. At 800 watts it’s also the lowest-power unit of the four, which mostly affects how large a bath it can heat in a reasonable window rather than how it cooks. Skip this if you want any way to verify the number that matters most — how close it actually holds to your set temperature — before you buy.

    Wattage Sets the Bath Size, Not the Result

    A degree-accurate 800-watt circulator and a degree-accurate 1100-watt circulator hold the same water at the same temperature and produce the same egg. What wattage changes is how long it takes to bring a given volume of water up to that temperature in the first place. The 1100W Anova and Breville are the better fit for a full stockpot or a cooler-sized bath; the 800W Instant is sized more comfortably for the everyday pot most kitchens already own.     Updated August 2026: every price re-checked and the cost table computed from each maker’s own dosing instruction, rather than the load count printed on the front of the package. Consumer Reports has since grown its detergent-sheet testing from six products to fourteen, and Tide Evo fiber tiles now lead that category. The sheet scores below are flagged as 2024-vintage, which is all that sits outside the paywall. Added the April 2024 CPSC recall covering 8.2 million Tide and Gain packet bags.

    Member’s Mark WindFresh powder washes a load for about seven cents, and a bulk liquid like Kirkland Signature Free & Clear runs about ten. Two Tide Hygienic Clean Heavy Duty 10X Power Pods cost about ninety-eight, and two pods is what Tide’s own instruction sheet calls the general recommendation; Earth Breeze Eco Sheets land somewhere in between. That is roughly a fourteen-fold spread between liquid, sheets, and pods on the same chore.

    I go through more loads than most people up north, between salt air, sweat, and towels that never quite dry out during hurricane season. Running the numbers on cost per load matters more when the machine runs almost daily, so I read the dosing line before the price tag now.

    Almost none of it shows up on the shelf tag. The tag prices a bottle. The laundry uses a dose. That dose is set by a line on a cap, or a sentence on a maker’s website that nobody reads. Buy a bulk liquid: Kirkland Signature Free & Clear at ten cents a load. Earth Breeze Eco Sheets are the loser in this comparison and the margin is not close.

    Do the sheets, pods, and liquid instructions even agree?

    Two caveats, because they matter. Mouseprint’s cap-line work documents the general Tide liquid cap system. I could not read the printed directions off the current 84-ounce Ultra Stain Release label myself, to confirm the same fill lines apply to that exact bottle. And the All suit is a filing, not a verdict. Both are named here as what they are.

    One number is checkable without any of that. Tide’s current 84-ounce Ultra Stain Release bottle claims 43 loads, which works out to 1.95 fluid ounces a load. Arm & Hammer’s 170-ounce Clean Burst claims 170 loads, or 1.0 fluid ounce a load. Two mainstream makers, the same laundry, doses that differ by a factor of two. At least one of them is wrong about how much detergent a load of washing needs.

    The arithmetic, so you can argue with it. $14.38 divided by 200 is $0.0719. $15.99 by 170 is $0.094. $13.99 by 146 is $0.0958. Earth Breeze is $12.00 by 60 for the half-sheet figure, and $12.00 by 15 for the two-sheet figure. That is because 30 sheets used two at a time is fifteen washes. Tide’s liquid is $12.97 by 43. The pods are $48.96 by 100, then by 50.

    Warehouse-club pricing came from a Costco price tracker rather than Costco directly, since Costco blocks automated reads. Treat the $13.99 as close rather than exact. Every other figure came off a live retailer listing on August 30, 2026.

    Sheets, Pods, or Liquid: Which Wins the Weighted Tally?

    Liquid’s 7.1 is 3.15 from stain removal, 1.25 from cost, 1.35 from dose control, 0.60 from label accuracy and 0.70 from storage. The interesting result is at the bottom: sheets edge the pods, 4.7 to 4.4. That is not where the cleaning scores point.

    Re-run it with cost at 40 percent and stain removal at 20, and the liquid still wins at 6.5. Earth Breeze comes in at 5.0 and the pods at 3.5. Cleaning is not what keeps the pods off the top of this table. Price is.

    Every figure in that table names its source in the row. Nothing here was measured on a bench of ours. The lab work belongs to Consumer Reports and to Reviewed, and where neither has published a number, the table says so rather than guessing. Our editorial standards cover the rest of how that works.

    Liquid Still Beats Sheets and Pods in the Lab

    Consumer Reports compared sheets against conventional formats and put the top liquid at 84 overall. More usefully, it recorded that the sheets as a group came in below CR’s lowest-performing liquid. That is the sentence that decides this category. The floor of the liquid aisle sits above the ceiling of the sheet aisle.

    Chemistry explains it. A jug carries higher concentrations of enzymes and surfactants than a dried strip does. Dose also moves with the load. Those costs are physical rather than chemical. The jug is heavy, it drips down its own spout, and it eats shelf space.

    One availability note before you go looking. Tide Ultra Stain Release still has a live page on tide.com and current listings at Walmart. But it is missing from the liquid lineup Tide features on its own shop page, and 2026 reviews on Tide’s page complain about not finding it in stores. Tide’s own reply points buyers to Target. Treat it as a legacy line rather than a safe reorder.

    Skip liquid if your laundry lives in a shared building where a jug walks off. Skip it too if you have already proven that you will pour by eye and overdose every load.

    Pods, the doubled dose, and a recall on the bag

    Read the recall first. On April 5, 2024 the Consumer Product Safety Commission announced a recall. It covered roughly 8.2 million flexible bags of Tide, Gain, Ace and Ariel laundry packets made between September 2023 and February 2024. The bag can split open near the zipper track, which puts loose packets within reach of a child. CPSC logged four reports of children accessing packets. The remedy is a refund, a child-resistant replacement bag and a cabinet lock, through Procter & Gamble.

    That is packaging, not chemistry. The pods themselves clean well, 78 overall in CR’s testing, second only to the liquid. If laundry needs to be a two-second decision in a shared machine room, the pods buy that.

    They bill you for it twice. Forty-nine cents at one pod, ninety-eight at the two Tide’s own instruction sheet recommends. That is against ten cents for a bulk liquid doing the same wash. And a pod cannot be made smaller, so every half-load pays full freight.

    Skip pods if anyone under about six lives in or visits the house. Skip them too if more than a couple of your weekly washes are small ones.

    Sheets: the plastic question, and the coffee stain

    Sheets lose on cleaning and it is not marginal. Earth Breeze at 29 was the best of the six sheet products in Consumer Reports’ comparison, against a top liquid at 84. CR’s laundry expert singled out coffee as a stain the category handles badly. Reviewed ran standardized stain strips through Whirlpool front-loaders and read the results on a photospectrometer. Liquids came out ahead of sheets by about 10 to 11 percent across all stains.

    Now the part the marketing rests on. “No plastic jug” is true, and it is also the narrowest possible claim. The sheet itself is commonly a polyvinyl alcohol film. In 2022 Blueland and the Plastic Pollution Coalition petitioned the EPA to pull PVA from its Safer Choice programme. They argued that roughly 75 percent of it survives wastewater treatment. The EPA denied that petition in April 2023. It found the PVA used in detergent films readily biodegradable, with half-lives under 60 days, and called the standard test conditions more conservative than a real treatment plant. So the regulator sided with the industry, on a question the petitioners still dispute. Buy the format for the reduced packaging if you want. It is not a plastic-free product.

    Sheets do genuinely earn a place: airport security, a sink in a hotel room, a studio apartment with one shelf. They also suit loads that need freshening rather than cleaning.

    Skip sheets if anything in the hamper has a real stain on it. Skip them too if the household runs more than about four loads a week, since the two-sheet dose then costs more per wash than the pods do.

    What I would buy is not what the tally picked

    After enough hurricane seasons of daily laundry, I would buy the Kirkland Signature Free & Clear over the top-scoring Tide, because ten cents a load beats thirty. The tally says Tide Ultra Stain Release wins on paper, 7.1 against 4.7 and 4.4, but price is what decides it for a household washing this often.

    The reason is that one CR sentence again: the sheets as a group finished below CR’s lowest-scoring liquid. If the bottom of the liquid category clears the top of the sheet category, the interesting decision is which liquid. The honest answer is that CR has not published a score for the Kirkland. So this is a bet on the floor of a category, not a verified pick, and I would rather say that plainly than dress it up. Paying triple for the best-scoring liquid is a preference. It is not a requirement.

    If your laundry is genuinely stained — kids, workshop, kitchen, dog — buy the Tide and stop reading. The 84 is real and stains are the one thing worth overpaying for.

    Three Questions About Sheets, Pods, and Liquid Dosing

    How many loads does a 30-sheet pack of Earth Breeze wash?

    Sixty, if every load gets half a sheet. That is the dose Earth Breeze’s own page gives for a regular load, and the only dose that makes the 60-load figure work. Fifteen, if you follow the same page’s instruction of two sheets for heavily soiled or extra-large loads. Most households land somewhere between, which is why the pack empties faster than the box suggests.

    Is one pod the right dose, or two?

    Tide answers this two different ways. Its current product page says to place one to two pods in the drum, and to add a second for especially dirty loads. Its own instructional sheet calls two the general recommendation and three for larger loads. Until Tide reconciles those, price a pod tub at both numbers before you compare it to anything else.

    Are detergent sheets plastic?

    The film is usually polyvinyl alcohol, which is a plastic. Whether it counts as pollution is contested. The EPA denied a 2022 petition to remove PVA from Safer Choice, finding it readily biodegradable in wastewater treatment, while the petitioners maintain most of it survives. The packaging saving is real and separate from that argument.

    One thing worth doing before your next order

    Go read the dosing line on whatever is currently in your laundry room, then divide the bottle by that dose and compare it to the load count on the front. It takes a minute, and it is the only number in this whole category that is actually about your own house.
