    The Sleep Stage Accuracy Number Oura Publishes Is 76 to 79 Percent

    Updated August 2026: rebuilt around what each maker publishes to support the words “sleep stages,” after Oura stated on August 23 that its advertised 95 percent figure is sleep-versus-wake agreement, with four-stage staging at 76 to 79 percent. WHOOP’s One plan, at $199 a year, is confirmed as the entry point to the 5.0 hardware.

    Three products, three ways of counting the same thing. Sleep stage accuracy is the number to ask for, and only the Oura Ring 4 has had one published in peer-reviewed journals, at roughly 76 to 79 percent for four-stage classification. The Eight Sleep Pod 5 Core publishes a bigger number behind a bigger sample — 78 percent across more than 5,700 people — on its own engineering blog, which no outside reviewer has checked. WHOOP 5.0 publishes no four-stage figure at all. The 95 percent you may have seen on an Oura advertisement is a real number measuring a different question, and Oura said so in writing on 23 August 2026.

    Sleep stages are an EEG measurement. None of these three has an EEG. Every one of them is estimating.

    I’ve spent enough hurricane seasons to know a bad night’s sleep rarely matches what a ring reports. Heat and a dropping barometer move that needle more than any algorithm.

    And Here Is the Short List Before the Arithmetic

    • Best-documented staging: Oura Ring 4 — five peer-reviewed papers, named journals, named sample sizes, and a company post that tells you which figure measures what.
    • Cheapest way in: WHOOP One at $199 a year, which includes the same WHOOP 5.0 hardware as the $239 Peak plan.
    • Biggest sample, least outside checking: Eight Sleep Pod 5 Core — 78 percent staging accuracy against full polysomnography on over 5,700 subjects, self-published.

    The 95 Percent Isn’t the Sleep Stage Accuracy Number

    On 21 August 2026, the Clarkson Law Firm filed a proposed class action in San Francisco alleging that Oura oversold its sleep tracking. TechCrunch reported the filing the same day. The complaint quotes Oura’s marketing — “built for accuracy,” “unparalleled accuracy,” a claim of 95 percent sleep-staging accuracy against clinical labs — and argues that “Oura rings are unable to measure any of the physiological signals needed to assess sleep quality or determine sleep stages,” because “sleep happens in the brain, not on one’s finger.” Oura says it “stands behind our science, research, and accuracy claims” and will defend the case. Nothing has been decided. Treat all of it as an allegation.

    What matters for a buyer is what Oura published two days later. On 23 August 2026, in a post titled Standing Behind Our Science, Oura writes that its algorithms “consistently reach 90–96% agreement with PSG” on sleep versus wake, and states plainly that this is “what the 95% figure refers to.” Two states: asleep, awake. The four-stage question — telling light, deep, REM and wake apart in each epoch — Oura puts at “roughly 76–79% agreement with human-scored PSG in healthy adults across peer-reviewed studies.”

    That is a gap of 16 to 19 points between the number on the advertisement and the number behind the screen you open in the morning. Both are Oura’s. Only one of them is about sleep stages.

    Here is every claim in this category I could check, and what checking it returned.

    But Two Oura Pages Give the Same Study Two Different Numbers

    Read the third row again, because it is the one that changed how I scored the rest of this page. Oura’s October 2024 announcement of the Ring 4 and its new staging algorithm says the algorithm reached 79 percent four-stage agreement in a single-night inpatient study of 35 participants at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, published in Sensors, with a Cohen’s kappa of 0.65 against 0.60 for the Apple Watch and 0.55 for the Fitbit. Oura’s August 2026 post lists that same Sensors 2024 study at 76.3 percent four-stage and 92 percent two-stage, and puts the 79 percent on a different Sensors paper from 2021 covering 440 nights.

    I cannot tell you which page is right. Both are Oura’s, both name the same journal and year, and a reader who lands on one of them walks away with a number the other one does not support. I have printed both and left it there.

    Worth saying clearly: Oura is the only company here whose numbers can be argued about this way, and that is a point in its favour, not against it. You cannot find a contradiction in figures a company never published.

    And Here Is the Sleep Stage Accuracy Each Maker Will Put in Writing

    Four axes, weighted, all scoring the published record behind the phrase “sleep stages.” None of them scores how well any device works. This score is built from documentation, not from a lab, because a spec neither company will confirm in writing cannot be measured this way.

    Yet Only the Peer-Review Axis Moves the Verdict

    The peer-review axis is 25 points of 100. Set each axis to zero in turn and the tally reads as follows.

    • Drop the published-a-figure axis: 57.5 Oura, 45.0 Eight Sleep, 6.7 WHOOP.
    • Drop the peer-review axis: 62.5 Oura, 75.0 Eight Sleep, 6.7 WHOOP. Eight Sleep wins.
    • Drop the model-on-sale axis: 75.0 Oura, 50.0 Eight Sleep, 6.7 WHOOP.
    • Drop the measured-against axis: 67.5 Oura, 55.0 Eight Sleep, 0.0 WHOOP.

    One axis flips it. If you do not care whether a number was reviewed by anyone outside the company that produced it, Eight Sleep has the better-documented claim on this table: a bigger sample, tied to the product you would buy. That is a real position and I am not going to pretend it is silly. It is just not mine.

    So Oura Is the One You Can Check, and the One Being Sued

    After enough hurricane seasons to distrust an unlabeled number, the Oura Ring 4 is the one I’d point a friend to, because it names its studies and journals in public. The Oura Ring 4 starts at $349, per Oura’s own 3 October 2024 launch post; its current store pages did not return a hardware price to me, and I am not going to invent one. Membership is $5.99 a month or $69.99 a year, first month free, which the store page does render. Full year one, one wearer: $418.99.

    What you get for the paperwork is the ability to argue. Oura names its studies, names its journals, names its sample sizes, and separates the two-stage figure from the four-stage figure in public. That is more than either competitor does. It also filed that clarification two days after a lawsuit accused it of blurring exactly those two numbers, which is a fact about the timing and not a verdict about the science.

    Skip this if: you want a staging figure measured on the Ring 4 itself. Every peer-reviewed number Oura cites ran on an earlier generation.     And WHOOP’s Sleep Stage Accuracy Page Publishes Heart Rate

    WHOOP scores 6.7 of 100 here and it is the loser of this page. Not because the strap is bad — I have no evidence either way, which is the whole problem. WHOOP’s page on how well it measures sleep leads with 99.7 percent accuracy for heart rate and 99 percent for heart-rate variability during sleep, against polysomnography, from a Central Queensland University study it names and does not cite. Its technical explainer says WHOOP data scientists trained the staging algorithm by aligning polysomnography results with strap data. It gives no agreement percentage for the result.

    The only four-stage number I could find for a WHOOP device comes from outside the company: a SLEEP Advances validation of six wrist-worn trackers, published 22 March 2025 across 62 adults, which returned a Cohen’s kappa of 0.37 for the WHOOP 4.0 — fair agreement, and last but one in that set. WHOOP no longer sells the 4.0. Whether the 5.0 does better is a question no party outside WHOOP has answered in public.

    Why Does WHOOP Only Publish Heart-Rate Numbers?

    WHOOP publishes clean heart-rate and pricing data but no four-stage sleep figure for the hardware it currently sells. The pricing is the part WHOOP does publish cleanly. WHOOP’s own membership page lists One at $199 a year, Peak at $239 and Life at $359. The WHOOP 5.0 device, a basic charger and a Jet Black CoreKnit band come with One. Sleep, strain and recovery insights are listed identically across all three tiers — the $40 step up to Peak buys healthspan features and health alerts, not better sleep data. If sleep is why you are here, the $199 plan is the plan.

    Skip this if: you want to see the staging number before you pay for the staging. There is no published figure for the hardware WHOOP currently ships.     How you feel in the morning is the only measurement none of these three devices takes.

    But Eight Sleep Has the Largest Sample and the Least Outside Checking

    The Pod 5 Core is a mattress cover with active temperature control that reads “heart rate, HRV, sleep phases, snoring, every night,” in Eight Sleep’s own words, without anything on your body. Its buy page shows $2,799, marked down from $2,999, at the size I could retrieve. An Autopilot plan “is required for the first 12 months (cancel any time), and covers two separate users per Pod.”

    Its staging evidence is the strangest mix on this page. The 78 percent figure comes from an 8 May 2024 engineering post describing a deep-learning model benchmarked against EEG on more than 5,700 subjects recorded with full polysomnography. That sample dwarfs every study Oura cites. It has also never been through peer review, and Eight Sleep’s own competitive post reaches for a YouTube reviewer rather than a journal when it wants to say the Pod beats a ring. Its heart-rate and HRV numbers — mean absolute error under one beat per minute, r-squared of 0.99, HRV correlation of 0.953 with a mean absolute error of 5.7 milliseconds — come from an internal analysis dated 25 May 2023, covering 474 nights from 163 subjects against a VitalConnect or Polar H10 ECG reference. Also internal. Also, for what it is worth, unusually specific.

    Skip this if: sleep data is the reason you are buying. You are paying for temperature control and getting staging as a bonus. Buy the Pod for the temperature.

    Which Company’s Sleep Stage Accuracy Costs the Least?

    These three cannot be compared on sticker price, so compare them on the smallest cheque each company will take for a year of sleep-stage data, then divide by the number of people that cheque covers. Every input below is published by the maker. Nothing is projected forward and no lifespan is assumed.

    $418.99 divided by $199.00 is 2.11. $1,549.00 divided by $199.00 is 7.78. Compared per household rather than per sleeper, the Pod comes to $3,098.00 against WHOOP’s $199.00, which is 15.57 times — so the single line in Eight Sleep’s subscription terms about covering two users halves the gap. It is the only computation on this page that moves in Eight Sleep’s favour, and Eight Sleep wrote it.

    Use Eight Sleep’s other published Autopilot price instead — the $24 a month billed annually that both its membership pages show, or $288 — and the total is $3,087.00, or $1,543.50 a sleeper, 7.76 times WHOOP. The choice between those two figures is the company’s to explain, not mine.

    Yet None of This Tells You Whether the Numbers Are Any Good

    Some limits, stated rather than papered over.

    This comparison is built entirely from what Oura, WHOOP, and Eight Sleep publish about their own products, plus the peer-reviewed and independent studies named above. Every figure above is either quoted from the maker or from a named journal. Oura’s and Eight Sleep’s store pages render prices in the browser and returned none to a fetch, so the $349 comes from Oura’s own launch announcement and the $2,799 from the size the Pod 5 Core page did return. I found no recall for Oura, WHOOP or Eight Sleep in what is publicly indexed at the US Consumer Product Safety Commission or the Canadian recalls database, which is a search of published listings rather than a query of either agency’s full file.

    I also have no way to compare 76 to 79 percent against 78 percent, and neither do you. They are different studies, different reference conditions, different populations, and one has been reviewed by strangers while the other has not. Two numbers can be printed to the same decimal place and still not be the same measurement. That is the whole lesson of the 95 percent.

    Mealime, eMeals, and Eat This Much are the three meal-planning apps worth actually comparing in 2026. Eat This Much is the only one that builds a plan around a specific calorie or macro target instead of just a diet label; Mealime is the cheapest way to get an organized weekly plan and grocery list without a subscription; eMeals wins on sheer grocery-ordering reach, tying into more retailers than the other two combined. (We also verified PlateJoy’s status before writing this — more on that below, because it changes the field.)

    Which Kind of Cook Are You? Start Here

    Picture three different people opening the App Store on a Sunday afternoon. The first just wants dinner decided for her four days a week, doesn’t care about calories, and refuses to pay a subscription for something a cookbook used to do for free — that’s a Mealime household. The second is hitting a specific protein number every day because of a training block or a doctor’s macro targets, and needs the app to reverse-engineer meals from that number — that’s an Eat This Much user. The third has a family with three different sets of tastes, wants dinner (and maybe breakfast and lunch) decided without much thought, and would rather have Walmart or Instacart pick up the bags than push a cart themselves — that’s who eMeals is built for.

    None of these apps are meal-kit services — they don’t ship you a box of pre-portioned ingredients the way HelloFresh or Blue Apron do (see our HelloFresh vs. Blue Apron vs. Home Chef comparison if that’s actually what you want), and they’re not pre-cooked meal delivery like CookUnity vs. Splendid Spoon vs. Daily Harvest. All three apps here assume you’re buying groceries and cooking — they just decide what to cook and build the list.

    Wait — Where’s PlateJoy?

    We planned to include PlateJoy in this comparison, since it’s been a go-to name in meal-planning software for years. But PlateJoy’s own support site now displays a notice reading “PlateJoy is ending July 1st, 2025,” and its Android app was pulled from Google Play in March 2025, per app-analytics tracker AppBrain. A live, subscribable app is a baseline requirement for a comparison like this, so we swapped in eMeals — the closest direct alternative in the same price-and-feature range — instead of recommending a service you can no longer sign up for.

    How Does Each App’s Recommendation Engine Actually Work?

    The three apps take genuinely different approaches to deciding what you’ll eat, and this is the part most reviews gloss over. Mealime asks about diet type, allergies, disliked ingredients, cook time, and household size up front, then generates a rotating weekly plan from its own recipe library — it’s preference-filtered, not calorie-driven. Eat This Much works backward from a number: you set (or it calculates) a daily calorie and macro target, and the app assembles meals — including your own saved recipes — to hit it, day by day, including different targets for workout vs. rest days on Premium.

    eMeals doesn’t run an algorithm at all in the way the other two do. According to its own how-it-works page, you browse 15 preset weekly menus — Clean Eating, Keto, Budget Friendly, Kid Friendly, and others — and manually pick the meals you want, mixing and matching across menus. That’s a real tradeoff: less “black box,” but also no personalized recommendation loop that learns your taste over time the way Mealime’s like/dislike system does.

    What Does Each App Actually Cost in 2026?

    Mealime is the cheapest way in: its free tier includes personalized meal plans and grocery lists, and Pro — which adds full nutrition data, browsing by calorie count, and recipe history — is $2.99/month with no annual option, per Mealime’s current App Store and Google Play listings. eMeals and Eat This Much both reward committing to a year, and both punish paying month-to-month.

    Run the math and the annual plans for eMeals and Eat This Much land at almost the same effective $5/month — the real decision isn’t price, it’s whether you want a calorie-target engine (Eat This Much) or broader retailer-ordering support (eMeals). eMeals’ All-Day Bundle, which adds breakfast and lunch plans, runs $99.99/year instead of $59.99, and Eat This Much’s month-to-month price ($14.99) is the steepest of the three if you’re not ready to commit to a year.

    Does the Grocery List Actually Save You a Trip — Or Just Make One?

    This is the biggest functional gap between the three. eMeals’ list pushes directly to Walmart, Instacart, Shipt, Amazon Fresh, Albertsons, Safeway, H-E-B, and Kroger for pickup or delivery — you can go from menu to a filled cart without leaving the app. Eat This Much offers a 1-click export straight to Instacart, with delivery in as little as an hour according to its own product page. Mealime generates a clean, aisle-organized list you can check off in-store or hand off to a partner, but it doesn’t push that list into a retailer’s cart for you — you’re still the one placing the order.

    Which App Actually Handles Dietary Restrictions and Family Size?

    If you or someone in your house has a real allergy or a disliked-ingredient list, eMeals is the weak link: it doesn’t offer allergy or ingredient-exclusion filtering, according to third-party pricing breakdowns of its plan structure — you’re choosing from preset menus and swapping meals manually if something doesn’t work. Mealime and Eat This Much both let you filter out allergens and disliked ingredients before a plan is ever generated, and both let you save custom recipes into the rotation.

    Serving-size scaling is the real dealbreaker to know about before you sign up. Mealime’s own support documentation states recipes scale up to 6 servings and that “families with more than 6 people will have trouble using Mealime,” requiring manual math past that point. eMeals caps most recipes at 2–4 or 6–8 servings per plan, without free adjustment. Eat This Much’s Premium tier explicitly markets “family meal planning with ingredient scaling,” making it the most flexible of the three for larger or mixed-diet households.

    So Which One Should You Actually Get?

    If you’re training toward a specific number — cutting weight, hitting a protein target, following a coach’s macros — get Eat This Much. It’s the only one of the three actually built to reverse-engineer a meal plan from a target instead of a diet label, and its Instacart export closes the loop from plan to cart. Its real weakness is the free tier, which only plans one day at a time; you’ll want Premium to get the weekly automation that makes the app worth having.

    If you don’t care about macros and just want dinner decided without paying for it, Mealime is the honest budget pick — its free tier isn’t a stripped-down trial, it’s a genuinely complete planning tool, and Pro is the cheapest paid tier of the three at $2.99/month. Its dealbreaker is the 6-serving cap; skip it if you’re regularly cooking for more people than that.

    eMeals earns its spot for households that want the grocery order handled, not just the list — nothing here ties into as many retailers. But go in knowing it won’t personalize around allergies or an exact macro number; you’re the one doing the substituting.

    How We Compared

    We did not sign up for hands-on trials of any paid tier for this comparison. Pricing, feature availability, and platform support were verified directly against each app’s current App Store and Google Play listings, official help-center and pricing pages, and product pages, cross-checked against patterns reported in recent published user reviews.     Where Do Samsung’s Own Pages Disagree on Price?

    Samsung’s Galaxy Ring product page opens with “From $299.99 before trade-in” and a $150 instant trade-in credit. Samsung’s buy page for the Titanium Silver, model SM-Q50XNZSAXAR, lists $399.99 against every one of eleven sizes, 5 through 15, with no promotional price shown. The difference is $100 and both figures are published by Samsung.

    This page uses $399.99, because that is the number on the page where you press buy. But a buyer who reads the marketing page first and the buy page second has been told two things, and the Ledger scores that at 6.0 of 30.

    A second mismatch sits alongside it. Samsung’s product page describes a sizing kit offering “9 sizes, from 5 to 13,” while the buy page sells sizes 5 through 15. Two purchasable sizes have no way to be tried on first, on a product whose entire fit story is that you wear it for 24 hours before deciding.

    Samsung’s battery figures split the same way. Its product page states up to 7 days on standard sizes and up to 6 days on the largest, sizes 12 and 13, with up to 14 days when a full cradle charge is added to that.

    How Does the Oura Ring 5 Compare to the Ring 4?

    Oura’s store renders prices per finish, which is more than Samsung’s marketing page manages. Oura Ring 5 is $399 in Silver and Black and $499 in Gold, Deep Rose, Stealth and Brushed Silver. The Ring 4 is $349 in Silver and Stealth, with Gold at $399 down from $499. Ring 4 Ceramic sits at $399, down from $499 in both finishes.

    The Ring 5 shipped 4 June 2026, per Tech Advisor’s launch coverage, and Oura’s own Ring 4 page now describes the Ring 5 as “40% smaller than Oura Ring 4.” The Ring 4 has not been withdrawn and is $50 cheaper. That is a live choice between two current Oura rings, not a discontinuation.

    Oura’s membership is the clearest ongoing cost in the category: “$5.99 USD/month or $69.99 USD/year,” with “New members get their first month free,” printed on Oura’s own page. Twelve months at $5.99 is $71.88, so the annual plan saves $1.89 a year. That is the entire arithmetic, and it is on Oura’s page rather than inferred.

    Which Smart Ring Is the Worst Match for You?

    Skip the RingConn Gen 2 Air if sleep apnea pattern insights were the reason you were interested, or if you want a charging case you can put in a pocket. Both are on the $299 Gen 2. Skip it too if the word core in “core health tracking” bothers you, because RingConn does not publish what sits outside it.

    Skip the Oura Ring 4 if a recurring bill is the thing you are trying to avoid. It is $349 plus $69.99 a year, and Oura is candid about that rather than apologetic. Skip it as well if you were buying it for being the newest thing Oura makes, because since 4 June 2026 it has not been.

    Skip the Samsung Galaxy Ring if you carry an iPhone or a non-Samsung Android; Samsung’s own page requires “a compatible Samsung Galaxy smartphone” and the Samsung Health app. It is the named loser here at 56.0 of 100, and not for its hardware: it loses on publishing two prices for one ring and no weight at all, and on selling two sizes its own sizing kit does not cover.

    Which Numbers Here Are Least Verifiable?

    No independent clinical validation of RingConn’s sleep apnea pattern insights was retrieved from any source checked for this page. Samsung publishes no weight for the Galaxy Ring on its product page, so that cell scores zero rather than borrowing a figure from a review. Oura’s own pages did not return an absolute size for the Ring 4, only a relative one for the Ring 5.     Samsung Galaxy Watch: Not FDA-Cleared

    Samsung takes the opposite approach. Its Blood Pressure Monitoring feature is built into the Samsung Health Monitor app. It displays an actual systolic and diastolic reading plus heart rate, using the watch’s optical sensors and a pulse-wave-analysis algorithm. It’s compatible with Galaxy Watch4 and later running Wear OS 4.0 or newer. Samsung began a phased US rollout of the feature on April 6, 2026, after years of it being US-restricted.

Skip that, and Samsung’s own documentation says the readings drift. Galaxy Watch8 (40mm, Wi-Fi/Bluetooth) starts at $299.99 directly from Samsung. Most of that price range from Watch4 onward supports the feature.

    Omron HeartGuide: FDA-Cleared Smartwatch Blood Pressure Monitoring

    Omron’s HeartGuide is a fundamentally different product category wearing a smartwatch’s clothing. Instead of estimating pressure from light and an algorithm, it uses a miniature oscillometric pump built into the watch band. That pump uses the same mechanism as a standard clinical cuff, inflating against your wrist to take a real measurement. Omron received 510(k) FDA clearance for the HeartGuide on January 8, 2019. As far as we can verify, it remains the only wrist-worn device with that specific clearance for blood pressure measurement. That’s rather than a wellness estimate or a notification.

    That accuracy comes with real tradeoffs. The inflation cycle takes roughly 30 seconds and feels like a scaled-down version of a normal cuff reading.     After enough pet-supply listings that didn’t match what came out of the box, I’d buy the JW Pet Comfy Perch: it’s the only one with a bird perch size you can verify yourself. Petmate, which owns JW Pet, publishes a width and a height for all eight variants of that perch, and it is the only one of these three products whose cross-section you can read off the maker’s own page before you order. Polly’s Pet Products publishes a range instead. The JW Pet InSight Sand Perch publishes a footprint for a flat bar that has no grip diameter at all.

    I’ve kept cats long enough to know that a maker’s page and a retailer’s listing do not always agree, so I read both before ordering anything for an animal. The mismatch below, between what Petmate publishes and what Chewy prints, is exactly the kind of gap that costs you if you skip one source.     What bird perch size do veterinarians recommend?

    The whole category rests on one instruction. VCA Animal Hospitals, writing on bumblefoot in avian species, says the common perch is a wooden dowel “that have a uniform size from end to end.” That, it says, “causes constant pressure on the underside of the foot that, over time, may cause a pressure sore.” It adds that cages “must be altered to provide different diameters of the perches and flat surfaces.” J. Miesle’s pododermatitis chapter in the IVIS avian health library, updated 24 February 2024, says perches “should vary in diameter.”

    Neither source names a diameter. Not one number, for any species, in either document. The inch figures commonly quoted in this category come from a size chart published by a company that sells perches. They do not come from either veterinary source. That is worth knowing before you treat one as a specification.

    So the useful question is not which material wins. It is which of these makers will tell you, in writing, what you are about to hang in the cage.

    Which two bird perches publish a comparable size?

    Petmate lists eight Comfy Perch variants with a length, a width and a height each. Chewy’s spec table for Polly’s hardwood assigns one width and one height per length. Those are the two surfaces that print a number, so those are the two that can be ranked. Price divided by the published length, at the one cross-section both lines describe as 1.25 inches.

    The JW Pet InSight Sand Perch is not in that table and cannot be. Petmate publishes it as 12.50 x 2.25 x 1.50 inches in the Regular size. The Small measures 10.50 x 4.00 x 2.00 inches. That is a flat bar with a width and a height, not a rod with a diameter. So there is no like-for-like figure to divide. Leaving the cell empty is the honest answer. A number invented to fill it would be worse than the gap.

    Small is 1.00 both times. Medium is 1.25 all three times. Large is 2.00 x 2.00, then 2.00 x 1.50, then 1.50 x 1.50. Three products, one word, three cross-sections, and the 28-inch Large is not even round.

    Two more things fall out of that table. The size number on the package is the rope alone. Petmate’s published length is 2.0 to 2.5 inches longer on every variant, because the threaded end caps count. And the 28″ Large and the 36″ Large carry the same $24.99. That is $0.8193 an inch against $0.6576, a 19.7 percent difference, and the cheaper inch is also the thinner perch. You cannot buy JW’s thickest rope at its best price per inch.

    Chewy quotes 1.25 inches for the Medium in its customer answers rather than in the spec table. That figure agrees with Petmate’s own 1.2500, which is the only maker-to-retailer agreement found anywhere in this comparison.

    What bird perch size does Polly’s Dragonwood sell?

    Polly’s Pet Products sells its full-length dragonwood direct, in 25 lengths from 12 to 36 inches, each in one of two thickness options. The options are named on the product itself. One is “Small 3/4″ – 1″ in diameter.” The other is “Large 1 1/4″ – 2 1/2″ in diameter.” The wood is described as hand picked, grown in Florida, sundried and manufactured in Georgia.

    That upper band is the problem. One 24-inch Large costs $34.09 and may arrive at 1.25 inches or at 2.5 inches. Those two thicknesses are not the same product for a bird. Chewy, selling the same line, prints a single width and height per length instead. Its figures climb with length: 0.75 at 12 and 14 inches, 1.00 at 16 and 18, 1.25 at 20 and 24, 1.50 at 28 and 30, 2.00 at 36.

    Both descriptions cannot be right. Either thickness tracks length, as Chewy’s table says. Or it is a band you choose independently of length, as the maker’s own variant names say. A buyer who wants 1.25 inches is told by the retailer to order a 20 or 24 inch bar. The maker, though, says 1.25 is only the floor of a range that runs to 2.5.

    Does a longer bird perch always cost more?

    Polly’s prices all 50 variants individually, which is more disclosure than either JW product offers. Read the whole ladder and it does not rise cleanly. In the Small band the 27-inch perch is $34.92 and the 28-inch is $30.28. One inch longer, $4.64 less, and $1.2933 an inch against $1.0814, a 16.4 percent drop. The Large band does the same thing at the same step: $35.92 at 27 inches, $32.09 at 28.

    Chewy’s ladder has its own step. The 16-inch is $17.82 and the 18-inch is $27.29, a $9.47 jump for two inches, or 53.1 percent. That 16-inch is the cheapest inch Chewy sells in this line at $1.1138. Read the whole size list before you pick a length. On both surfaces the obvious next size up is sometimes the cheaper one.

    Is Polly’s bird perch in stock?

    The rendered product page showed “Variant sold out or unavailable” against all 50 variants. The same product’s own JSON feed, read minutes later, returned available: true for every variant it listed, with prices attached. Separately, the store’s collection page showed live stock counts.

    Take the feed. It is the data the page is built from. But the page a buyer lands on is telling them the perch cannot be bought. That is a real cost to a maker selling direct from an unbranded myshopify.com address rather than its own domain. This is not the first storefront whose rendered page has contradicted its own product feed in these checks. The feed has been the right one every time.

    Does a rough bird perch size really protect nails?

    Which bird perch size wins on the weighted scorecard?

    Five axes, all of them scoring what a maker is prepared to put in writing. None of them scores foot health. None of these companies publishes a test of it, and this site has run none. Weights are set by how much each item changes what a buyer can actually order.

    How was each bird perch size scored?

    On axis one, full marks go to a figure per variant on the maker’s own site. Two thirds apply where the figure describes a flat bar rather than a grip, and one third goes to a range. On axis two, the score is the share of size words that decode. JW’s Small and Medium do, but Large does not, so 2 of 3 is 16.7. Polly’s earns a third for printing its bands inside the variant name instead of hiding them. The Sand Perch’s Small is 4.00 inches wide against the Regular’s 2.25, so neither word decodes. On axis five, Petmate and Chewy agree on 1.2500 for the Comfy Medium. They disagree by 2.5 inches on the Sand Perch’s length, and flatly contradict each other on Polly’s.

    The weights are 30 and 25 on the two disclosure items. Those are what stop you ordering the wrong thickness. Set any one axis to zero and the winner does not move. Without axis one it is 41.7 / 33.3 / 18.3, and without axis two, 55.0 / 35.0 / 38.3. Without axis three it is 66.7 / 18.3 / 33.3, and without axis four, 61.7 / 43.3 / 28.3. Axis five alone leaves it at 61.7 / 43.3 / 35.0. Second place is not stable at all. Drop the composition axis, or the size-word axis, and the Sand Perch passes Polly’s.

    There is no tie to break here. 71.7 against 43.3 is 28.4 points, and almost all of it is one company publishing dimensions where another publishes ranges. Disagree with the 30-point weight on that first axis and the arithmetic is above: the order holds.

    Which bird perch should you skip?

    Skip the JW Pet Comfy Perch if you need a thickness above 1.25 inches and you also want a straight answer. That is the Large size, and Large is where the naming breaks. Petmate publishes no fibre content, and the rope holds a bent shape only because it is tightly wrapped, with no internal wire.

    Skip Polly’s Full Length Dragonwood if a specific thickness matters to you. The Large band spans 1 1/4 to 2 1/2 inches, and you find out which one you bought when the box opens. It is also the expensive option per inch by roughly 3x, and its own storefront currently tells visitors the product is unavailable when its data says otherwise.

    Skip the JW Pet InSight Sand Perch if you were buying it for the nail claim. It is the named loser here at 38.3, and not because it is a bad object: it scores last because the maker will not say what it is made of, its two size words describe two different shapes, and its own retailer publishes a length 2.5 inches off the maker’s. The claim about nails is contested by the veterinary text quoted above. Ask a vet about nails rather than buying a spec.

    What about this bird perch comparison stays unverified?

    Polly’s actual thickness at any given length is not published anywhere: the band is the whole disclosure, and no fetch of the maker’s store or of Chewy produced a figure. Neither Petmate nor Polly’s publishes a service life, a load rating or a cleaning interval, so nothing here can be turned into a running cost without inventing one. And the Chewy rating counts, 614 for the Comfy Perch Medium and 224 for the Sand Perch, are pooled across lengths, so the count shown on a 32-inch page includes people who bought the 21-inch.

    Recalls, checked in both directions. No open recall covers any of these three products at the US Consumer Product Safety Commission or on the Canadian recalls database, and pet bird accessories are not a listed CPSC subcategory, so read that as a search of what is publicly indexed rather than a database query. Petmate, whose legal name is Doskocil Manufacturing Company, does carry one: CPSC 25-421, 7 August 2025, about 15,400 Pet Zone laser pointer and LED ball pet toys sold at Menards, button cell battery ingestion, no injuries reported. It covers no bird product and no JW Pet item, and it is named here so a search result does not get mistaken for a recall on a perch.

    What should you check on the cage before the perch?

    Thickness only matters once the cage is right, and bar spacing and flight room decide more than any accessory does.     Updated August 2026: rebuilt from the EPA’s published filtration documents and 3M’s own MPR-to-MERV rating chart, with current prices confirmed for both disposable filters.

    The furnace filter ratings verdict. Buy the Nordic Pure Pleated MERV 12 at $9.67 a filter. It loses this scorecard by 3.3 points to the Filtrete MPR 1900 / MERV 13. It is still the one to buy. The Filtrete costs $95.88 a year against $38.66 for an edge the EPA states as a floor, not a measurement. The Air-Care Silver 94 Electrostatic Washable, model ACM6, is the loser here at 16.7 of 100: it is named after a percentage its own maker does not publish.

    Three furnace filter ratings sit in this comparison. MERV, MPR and a number printed inside a product name. One of them has a published test method behind it.

    In a hot, humid coastal spot, the air handler runs nearly year-round. I’ve swapped enough filters to trust a printed test method over a number on the box.

    Furnace Filter Ratings: Which One Has a Published Test?

    MERV is the one. The EPA describes it as reporting “an air filter’s ability to capture particles between 0.3 and 10 microns” and says the rating “is derived from a test method developed by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air Conditioning Engineers.” That is a named body running a named test.

    The other two numbers on these boxes are house scales. MPR is 3M’s own, and to 3M’s credit it publishes the crosswalk. The third is a percentage inside a product name, and the company that makes the product does not print it anywhere. None of the three filters in this comparison approaches HEPA-equivalent filtration either: the EPA’s technical summary says filters described as HEPA “are generally equivalent to MERV 16,” two steps above the MERV 13 ceiling here.

    What Do the EPA’s Fine-Particle Figures Say About MERV 12?

    The 0.3-to-1.0 micron band is where this decision lives. Smoke, most bacteria and the fine end of pollen and dander debris sit in it, and it is the band a MERV 8 filter is not built for — the EPA’s own bulletin describes MERV 8 as handling “most of the larger particles that are 3-10 microns in size.”

    Two published points bracket the rest. A MERV 11 removes “roughly 20% of the particles between .3 and 1 micron.” MERV 13 and above must “demonstrate at least 50% removal efficiency for the smallest particles tested.” Both figures are the EPA’s. Neither is a measurement of any filter in this comparison; the second is a requirement a filter has to clear to earn the label.

    MERV 12 sits in the 30-point gap between them and the EPA publishes no figure for it. Neither does Nordic Pure. So the honest statement about the filter I am recommending is that its fine-particle performance is somewhere above 20 percent and below whatever MERV 13 clears, and that is as far as the public record goes.

    The EPA’s own advice is to fit “at least a MERV 13 rating, or as high a rating as your system fan and filter slot can accommodate.” The second half of that sentence is the part the box does not repeat. Its technical summary adds that a higher-efficiency filter “must also take into account the compatibility of the filter with the existing ducted HVAC system to ensure that airflow will not be impeded by the added resistance”, and that “a trained professional may need to modify the system.” Check the sticker inside your filter door before you buy up the scale.

    How Much Does the Same Furnace Filter Slot Cost Per Year?

    Filter price is the number people compare. Change interval is the number that decides the bill, and both makers leave it to you. 3M says to change the Filtrete “at least once every 90 days” and its own app offers 30-, 60- and 90-day reminders. Four changes a year and twelve changes a year are both inside that instruction.

    At the same cadence the Filtrete costs 2.48 times what the Nordic Pure costs. Change the Filtrete monthly, which its own reminder app invites, and it costs 7.44 times the Nordic Pure’s quarterly bill. That spread is larger than the difference between any two filters on the shelf, and it is set by a habit rather than by a purchase.

    Why Is the Washable Filter’s Annual Cost Left Blank?

    The washable filter’s annual cost cannot be computed from anything published. It costs $69.95 once, Air-Care warrants it for the life of the furnace it sits in, and Air-Care states nowhere how many washes it survives. No maker-published service life exists for it, so the annual-cost cell stays empty rather than resting on a guess.

    What can be computed from published prices is when the washable filter has paid for itself against each disposable. Against the Nordic Pure at four changes a year: $69.95 ÷ $38.66 = 1.81 years. Against the Filtrete at four changes a year: $69.95 ÷ $95.88 = 0.73 years. Both figures assume the washable filter is still working at that point. That assumption is what the whole product turns on. It’s the one thing its maker will not put a number to.

    How Do These Furnace Filter Ratings Score Across Four Axes?

    What Happens When Each Axis Is Zeroed Out?

    Zero the top axis and it reads Filtrete 50.0, Nordic Pure 35.0, Air-Care 5.0. Drop the cost axis instead and the order shifts to Filtrete 53.3, Nordic Pure 50.0, Air-Care 16.7. Zeroing the resistance axis moves nothing, which is what an axis paying almost nothing to anyone looks like. It stays in because a published pressure drop is exactly what the EPA’s warning needs and none of the three supplies it.

    One re-run flips it. Zero the fine-particle axis and Nordic Pure wins 55.0 to 43.3. The entire Filtrete result is that one axis, and that axis is scored on a regulatory floor rather than on a test of this filter.

    Why the Nordic Pure MERV 12 Wins the Tie-Breaker

    With the air handler running nonstop, I trust the Nordic Pure Pleated MERV 12’s ASHRAE-tested rating over the Air-Care’s percentage. Three point three points out of a hundred is a tie, and that’s the tie-breaker.

    The reasoning is the price of the margin. The Filtrete’s whole lead is a published requirement, not a measured result, and buying it costs $57.22 more every year at the same change interval. Against that, the EPA’s advice to fit MERV 13 comes with a condition about the fan and the slot that most buyers cannot check without a technician. A MERV 12 filter changed on time beats a MERV 13 filter left in past its interval, and at $9.67 the cheaper filter is the one people actually replace.

    If someone in the house has a diagnosed respiratory condition, the calculation changes and the Filtrete is the right buy — provided the furnace is rated for it.

    Nordic Pure Pleated MERV 12: Our Furnace Filter Ratings Pick

    The only one of the three sold on nothing but the ASHRAE-tested number. No proprietary scale, no percentage in the product name, no second rating to reconcile. Walmart’s six-pack at $57.99 puts it at $9.67, which is 40 percent of the Filtrete’s per-filter price.

    The gap in its record is the one this page cannot close. Neither the EPA nor Nordic Pure publishes what a MERV 12 does between 0.3 and 1.0 microns. Nordic Pure’s own site also returned no price and no change interval to the reads made for this update.

    Skip this if the household has a diagnosed allergy or asthma and the furnace is rated for MERV 13. The one published figure separating the two filters is at the fine end, and that is the end that matters for that buyer.

    Filtrete MPR 1900/MERV 13: The Priciest Furnace Filter Choice

    The only filter here with a published fine-particle figure attached to its rating, and the only one whose maker publishes a document reconciling its own scale to the industry one. Most house scales do not come with one.

    The marketing still leans on the floor it clears. “24% more microparticles than MERV 13 requirements” is a comparison to a minimum, and 3M does not print the resulting capture rate. Its own page also notes the product name is changing, from Premium Allergen, Bacteria & Virus to Allergens, Bacteria, Viruses & Air Pollutants, so the box on the shelf may not match the name in any review written this year.

    Skip this if your furnace’s filter door does not carry a maximum MERV figure you have checked, or if $95.88 a year is a bill you will quietly avoid by leaving the filter in for six months. A lapsed MERV 13 is worse than a replaced MERV 12.

    Air-Care Silver 94: The Furnace Filter Ratings Loser

    A washable filter you rinse instead of replace, in 27 sizes, at $69.95 for the one-inch version. The idea is sound and the waste argument is real. The paperwork is where it comes apart.

    The 94 in the name is a retailer’s number. Air-Care’s own site sells by frame type, prices by telephone, and publishes no efficiency percentage anywhere. The “Limited Lifetime warranty” in the listing is, in Air-Care’s own words, coverage for “the life of the unit in which it is installed” — the furnace’s life, not the filter’s and not yours. And at MERV 8 it sits below the part of the scale this entire comparison is about.

    Skip this if anyone in the house reacts to fine particles, or if you would not reliably pull and rinse a filter every one to three months for years. Its whole case is a maintenance habit no warranty and no reminder app is checking.

    Is Any Furnace Filter Here Under a CPSC Recall?

    Checked against CPSC’s published recalls: nothing on the Filtrete furnace filter line, nothing on Nordic Pure, nothing on Air-Care. The one 3M recall that surfaces on a search is worth naming precisely so it is not mistaken for this: in March 2013 3M recalled about 10,000 Filtrete room air purifiers, models FAP00-RS and FAP00-L, because the ion generator could overheat. Two incidents, no injuries, and no furnace filter of any kind involved.

    What Can Published Furnace Filter Ratings Tell You?

    No filter here was installed or measured for this comparison, and no such claim is made. Everything above is the published record: an ASHRAE-derived rating, an EPA-published requirement, a maker’s own conversion chart, and three prices read off live listings. That is a scorecard of documentation.

    Less than a lab would give you. More than the boxes do. A rating with a test behind it and a price with an interval attached settles this purchase better than a percentage printed inside a product name.
