In a humidifier vs purifier choice, buy a humidifier if the air is dry and an air purifier if the problem is dust, pollen or smoke. They do different jobs. The Levoit LV600HH humidifier is $99.99, and the Levoit Core 400S air purifier is $189.99.
I have run both kinds of machine. In South Florida the air is wet most of the year, and the only machine I wanted there was one that filtered. Colorado is the opposite, and even in rafting season the air dries you out. What that taught me is to measure the room first, because the wrong machine just sits there using power.
Do I Need a Humidifier or Air Purifier?
Start with the problem. Dry air is a moisture problem. Dust, pollen, pet dander and smoke are particle problems. EPA says to keep indoor humidity below 60 percent, ideally between 30 and 50 percent, and says a basic humidity meter will show where a room sits.
Two Levoit machines make the split concrete. Levoit sells both at its own store, and neither does the other’s job.
| Levoit LV600HH humidifier | Levoit Core 400S air purifier | |
|---|---|---|
| What it does | Adds water vapor to the air | Pulls air through filters to catch particles |
| Price | $99.99 | $189.99 (list $219.99) |
| Size rating | 430 to 753 sq ft | 358 sq ft at 4.8 air changes an hour; 1,718 sq ft at 1 |
| Output | 300 mL an hour cool mist, 500 mL warm | CADR 231 CFM |
| Tank or filter | 6 L tank, up to 36 hours a fill, no filter | 3-stage filter, $49.99 to replace |
| Rated power | 280 W | 38 W |
| Warranty | 2 years | 2 years |
| Changes humidity | Yes | No function listed by Levoit |
Read the last row first. Only the humidifier changes the humidity, and only the purifier has a CADR rating, which EPA says covers particles only. The price gap is $189.99 minus $99.99, or $90.00, so the purifier costs 1.9 times as much (189.99 ÷ 99.99 = 1.90).
A humidity meter settles the first question. Under 30 percent in winter means the room is dry. A normal reading and a dusty shelf point the other way.
Can an Air Purifier Replace a Humidifier?
No. An air purifier moves air through filters and returns the same air to the room. Levoit’s page for the Core 400S lists CADR, room size, noise, power and filters, and no humidifying function. EPA says the CADR rating system is for particles only.
The reverse fails too. A humidifier adds water and removes nothing, and EPA says excess moisture can encourage dust mites and mold.
Combination units exist. Dyson’s Purifier Humidify+Cool PH2 De-NOx is $899.99 on dyson.com in nickel and gold, down from $1,099.99, with a one-gallon tank and a filter swap every 12 months at 12 hours of use a day. That is $610.01 more than the two Levoit machines together ($289.98), or 3.1 times as much. Check stock before planning around it, because Dyson’s page showed conflicting availability notices on October 18.

Humidifier or Air Purifier for Dry Air
A humidifier is the machine for dry air. The LV600HH holds 6 liters and runs up to 36 hours on a fill, per Levoit’s page. It puts out up to 300 mL an hour as cool mist and 500 mL an hour warm, and Levoit rates it for 430 to 753 square feet.
The target matters more than the machine. EPA says not to humidify above 50 percent relative humidity, and to move the unit, turn it down or run it less if water condenses on windows or walls. The number drifts more than people expect, so I check a meter before I trust a dial setting.

Upkeep is the cost people skip. EPA says to empty the tank, dry the surfaces and refill with fresh water every day, and to scrub the tank every third day to remove scale and film. It also recommends low-mineral water.
EPA adds that ultrasonic and impeller humidifiers appear to disperse the most microorganisms and minerals. The LV600HH is a hybrid ultrasonic model, so that applies to it. Our guide to humidifier types covers how cool mist, warm mist and ultrasonic compare.
Humidifier vs Air Purifier for Allergies
A purifier is the one aimed at airborne particles. EPA says studies with portable HEPA cleaners found improvements in one or more allergy or asthma symptoms. It also says the studies do not always show major improvements and do not show improvements in all symptoms.
The Core 400S lists a CADR of 231 CFM. ENERGY STAR’s certified list gives 231 for smoke, 240 for dust and 259 for pollen. For how coverage numbers get published, see our look at air purifier coverage ratings.
A humidifier does not belong on that list. EPA says people with lung disease or respiratory allergies may be more susceptible to what the mist disperses. It also says to stop using the humidifier and contact a physician if you have respiratory symptoms you believe are linked to it.
Mold and musty smells are a different case. EPA says portable air cleaners do not address the cause of mold and musty odors, and that the key to mold control is moisture control. A damp room needs a dehumidifier, and we compared 50-pint dehumidifiers for that.
How Much Electricity Does a Humidifier Use?
The U.S. average residential price was 18.31 cents per kilowatt-hour in July 2026, per the Energy Information Administration’s Electric Power Monthly, Table 5.6.A. Your rate will differ. The same table has Florida at 15.03 cents and Colorado at 17.00.
Cost is watts times hours, divided by 1,000, times the rate. The humidifier row uses Levoit’s 280 W rating, which is a warm-mist ceiling because Levoit publishes no cool-mist draw. Run time is assumed at 8 hours a night for 120 nights, so change it to match your winter. The purifier row uses ENERGY STAR’s 237 kWh a year.
| Machine and basis | Electricity arithmetic | Electricity a year | Consumables | Total a year |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| LV600HH, 8 hours × 120 nights | 0.280 kW × 960 h = 268.8 kWh × $0.1831 | $49.22 | Descaling pads, optional, $14.99 per 10-pack | $49.22 to $64.21 |
| Core 400S, one filter a year | 237 kWh × $0.1831 | $43.39 | 1 × $49.99 | $93.38 |
| Core 400S, two filters a year | 237 kWh × $0.1831 | $43.39 | 2 × $49.99 = $99.98 | $143.37 |
| Both machines | Rows above added | $92.61 | Pads and filters as above | $142.60 to $207.58 |
Levoit’s filter page gives no replacement interval. It says you may need to replace the filter earlier or later depending on use, so the table shows one and two a year. At the 38 W rating all year, the purifier would use 332.9 kWh, or $60.95. Our air purifier filter costs comparison runs the longer filter math.
The purifier costs more to own, mostly because of the filter. The humidifier costs less to run, about 5.1 cents an hour at the ceiling, but it takes cleaning time.
Can You Use a Humidifier and Air Purifier Together?
Yes. They do separate jobs, and EPA’s only ceiling is on the humidity: no higher than 50 percent when you humidify. Put a meter in the room and let it decide how long the humidifier runs.
Follow the manufacturer’s instructions, and look for a UL or ETL listing before you buy either one. Skip any purifier sold to make ozone. EPA calls ozone a lung irritant and says no federal agency has approved ozone generators for occupied spaces.
I checked CPSC’s recall database on October 18, 2026, searching by product name and by recall title. It returned no Levoit recalls. Dyson’s only entry is a 2014 recall of AM04 and AM05 bladeless heaters, which are neither purifiers nor humidifiers.
Which Is Better, a Humidifier or an Air Purifier?
Buy the humidifier if a meter says the room runs under 30 percent and you will clean it every few days. Buy the purifier if the complaint is dust, pollen or smoke. Skip the purifier for mold and musty smells, where EPA says moisture control is the fix.
Skip the humidifier if you will not do the cleaning EPA describes. Needing both is possible. Running both for a year comes to $142.60 to $207.58 on the math above, plus the $189.99 and $99.99 to buy them.
Frequently Asked Questions About Humidifiers and Air Purifiers
Does an Air Purifier Add Moisture to the Air?
No. An air purifier pulls air through filters and puts it back. Levoit’s Core 400S page lists no humidifying function, so it will not fix dry air.
What Humidity Level Should I Keep Indoors?
EPA says to keep indoor humidity below 60 percent, ideally between 30 and 50 percent. For rooms with a humidifier, EPA says not to humidify above 50 percent. A basic humidity meter shows where you are.
Can a Humidifier Make Allergies Worse?
It can if the room gets too damp. EPA says excess moisture can encourage dust mites and mold, and that people with respiratory allergies may be more susceptible to what mist disperses. Keep the humidity at 50 percent or under, and ask a clinician about your own symptoms.
How Often Should I Clean a Humidifier?
EPA says to empty the tank, dry the surfaces and refill with fresh water daily. It says to scrub the tank every third day to remove scale and film. Follow the maker’s instructions if they differ.
