First, these are manufacturers’ own figures, measured at settings of their choosing: airflow is quoted at top speed, while Rowenta’s 35 dB(A) applies to its quietest Silent Night mode — so read down the columns rather than dividing across them. The one row where both numbers describe the same setting is Lasko’s tower, which publishes 262 CFM and 55.4 dBA at high speed: 262 ÷ 55.4 ≈ 4.7 CFM per decibel. Second, Dyson publishes airflow in gallons per second rather than CFM; at 1 US gallon = 0.1337 cubic feet, 76 gal/s × 0.1337 × 60 converts to roughly 610 CFM.
Reading the airflow column
The pedestal rows dominate, and the physics is unglamorous: a 16-inch open blade simply moves more air than a narrow column outlet or a hollow ring. The spec sheet retailers list for Lasko’s basic 2526 shows 1,710 CFM at about $59, and Rowenta’s premium pedestal publishes 2,436 CFM at $179.99 — both several times the published output of the tower and bladeless designs. Height and tilt adjustment compound the advantage, letting you aim that air across a large living room, workshop, or garage.

A caveat in the other direction: many tower and bladeless makers publish no CFM at all, and where figures exist they are not measured to one shared standard, so treat cross-brand airflow comparisons as directional rather than exact. The direction, though, is consistent — an open-blade pedestal is the airflow-per-dollar choice, which is why it remains the default for big, hot, or poorly ventilated spaces.
Reading the noise column
The noise column is where towers justify themselves. Lasko publishes a 39 dBA floor for its Wind Curve tower — quiet-library territory — alongside a night mode that dims the display and steps the speed down, which is exactly the feature set of a bedroom fan. Will a fan lower the temperature of a room?
