Black Friday vs Cyber Monday mostly comes down to what you are buying. Black Friday, November 27, 2026, is usually the day for TVs and other bulky gear. Cyber Monday, November 30, tends to suit laptops, software and small electronics. If a new model is due soon, waiting beats both.

I’ve bought electronics around the holidays for years. The lesson never changes: the day matters less than the model number. So this guide sorts the usual pattern by category, then covers return windows and the cases where you should skip both days.

Black Friday vs Cyber Monday: the short answer

Black Friday is the in-store day. Stores put their loudest TV and appliance offers there, and those offers are often limited to a small stock of one model. Cyber Monday is the online day. It suits things that never run out, like software, and things that restock fast, like laptops.

However, the two days overlap more than they used to. Many stores start deals early and run them for a week or more. Also, retailers set their own schedules and announce them late, so no one can hand you a calendar today. Treat everything below as a pattern, not a promise.

Black Friday vs Cyber Monday by category

Here is the usual split. It is a rule of thumb, so confirm any item against its price history before you buy.

CategoryUsually the better dayWhy it tends to work that wayCheck before you buy
TVsBlack FridayStores lead with big, bulky stock and limited-run modelsThe exact model number against the one reviewed
LaptopsCyber MondayOnline restocks and new configurations show up after the weekendMemory and storage size, line by line

Notice what the last column says. It never says “the discount.” The discount on the tag is the one number you cannot trust by itself.

Which Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals are worth it this year

Deal-week update: verified deals go in this section once stores post them. Until then, use four tests on any offer you see.

  • Same model: the model number matches the one that got the good reviews.
  • Real low: the price is at or near the lowest the item has hit in a price history chart.
  • Spec floor: it still has the memory, ports or panel type you would insist on at full price.
  • Fair return terms: you can send it back if it is not what you expected.

Keepa shows Amazon price history charts and sends price-drop alerts. Other stores keep order history in your account, and that is worth checking too. Most of us have bought something “on sale” and found it cost the same last month.

What should you check for a TV deal?

Start with the model number. Stores often carry versions of a TV that exist only for sales events, and their specs can differ from the reviewed model. Cyber Monday is the weaker day for TVs, because the best-priced models may be gone by then. Skip the Friday rush only if you do not need the TV before January. If the built-in apps worry you, our streaming box comparison shows what each platform does.

What should you check for a laptop deal?

Check memory and storage first. A low sale price on a laptop with half the memory is not a deal. Because Monday offers often include extra configurations, compare the spec line to the one you wanted. Black Friday is the weaker day for laptops. Skip a Friday laptop deal unless the exact configuration matches what you planned to buy, since cheaper versions can share a name.

Black Friday vs Cyber Monday: return windows

Stores set return windows by product and by membership. They do not set them by the day you buy. That said, two big stores have terms worth knowing before you click.

Best Buy’s return page says most products get 15 days for standard customers, or 60 days for My Best Buy Plus and Total members. The clock starts the day you receive the item. TVs over 50 inches cannot go back with a prepaid label, so plan to carry it to a store. That page does not mention a separate holiday window, so look at your checkout page.

Walmart’s return page says you have 90 days to return items in most cases. It lists a 30-day window for consumer electronics. It also says some holiday purchases may get an extended window but gives no dates.

Can you get a price match on Black Friday?

Not always. Best Buy’s price-match page will not match a competitor’s offer marked as Black Friday pricing. It also excludes competitor prices from the Thursday before Thanksgiving through the Monday after. However, if Best Buy lowers its own price during your return and exchange period, it says it will match the lower price on request. For most standard customers, that is the same 15 days.

When neither Black Friday nor Cyber Monday beats waiting

Skip both days when a new model is close. Makers often show new TVs and laptops in early January, and stores tend to clear older stock afterward. Waiting also works when the sale price is no lower than a price you saw in the fall. For laptops, a bundle with a smaller drive is a sign to walk away.

Buy now instead if the old one has died or you need it for a gift. A good price on a model you will use for years beats a perfect price that never arrives.

If I were spending my own money on a TV, I would shop the Friday ads, write down the exact model number, and check its price history before I touched checkout. For a laptop I would wait for Monday and compare memory and storage line by line. Soundbars follow the TV, so see our soundbar comparison for what to look for there.

Frequently asked questions about black friday vs cyber monday

Is Cyber Monday better than Black Friday for TVs?

Usually not. Black Friday is when stores lead with TVs, and the best-priced models can sell out before Monday. If a TV is still in stock on Monday, compare the price to the Friday one before you buy.

Are Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals the same?

No, but they overlap. Many stores start deals early and keep them running for days. Online-only items and software tend to get their own Monday offers.

Do Black Friday purchases get a longer return window?

Not by default. The Best Buy and Walmart pages I read tie the window to the product and membership, not the purchase day. Walmart says some holiday purchases may get an extended window, so check your receipt.

Is it worth waiting until January?

Yes, when a new model is coming. January brings new product announcements, and older models often get cheaper afterward. If your price history shows the sale price is no better than usual, waiting costs you little.
