A heated mattress pad warms the bed from underneath, and an electric blanket warms you from above. For a queen bed, the Beautyrest Microfiber Heated Mattress Pad is $82.99 at Target, and the Serta Queen Plush Electric Heated Blanket is $148.99 there.

Cold bedrooms in the Midwest and in Colorado taught me what heated bedding is for. It has little to do with the room. The sheets start the night at room temperature and take their time giving any of it back. A pad fixes that from below. A blanket fixes it from above, and it can leave the bed and go sit on the couch with you.

The cord and controller are the parts that get tugged and bent in bed, so that is where I look first each fall. ESFI lists a cracked or frayed cord as a reason to replace the whole thing, and the safety section below has the rest of its checklist.

Heated Mattress Pad vs Electric Blanket

Two queen-size products make the comparison concrete: one pad and one blanket, both listed as in stock at Target on October 18, 2026.

The pad costs $66.00 less than the blanket (148.99 minus 82.99). Target lists two controllers on both queen products, so two sleepers can set different heat.

Fit is where the two types split. A pad is fitted, and Target lists the Beautyrest pad for mattresses up to 18 inches deep. Measure your mattress against that limit, and remember a topper adds depth if the pad goes over it. If you sleep on one of the mattress toppers we compared, that matters. The Serta queen blanket is listed at 90 by 84 inches and as machine washable.

Which Is Better: Electric Blanket or Heated Mattress Pad?

Pick the pad if the cold is in the bed. It costs less here, it sits under the sheet, and it takes the chill off the mattress before you lie down.

Pick a blanket if the cold is on top of you, as in a drafty room with a decent mattress. You can also lift it off the bed and use it somewhere else, which a fitted pad cannot do. If what you want from the top layer is weight rather than heat, our weighted blanket guide covers sizing.

On settings and warranty the two are close. Target lists 10 heat settings on the Serta and 5 on the pad, with a 5-year warranty on each. A Q&A answer on the Serta page puts the blanket at 70 to 120 watts on its highest setting.

Beautyrest’s Queen Plush blanket would have been the second blanket here. Target showed every queen color of it out of stock on October 18, so it is not a pick.

How Much Does It Cost to Run an Electric Blanket?

Multiply watts by hours, divide by 1,000 for kilowatt-hours, then multiply by your rate. This table assumes 8 hours a night and 18.31 cents per kilowatt-hour, which is the U.S. average residential price for July 2026 in the EIA’s Electric Power Monthly. Your own rate will differ.

Wattage and where it comes fromEnergy per nightCost per nightCost per 30 nights
70 W, low end of the 70 to 120 W range an answer on Target’s Serta blanket page gives70 × 8 ÷ 1,000 = 0.56 kWh0.56 × 0.1831 = $0.1016.8 kWh × 0.1831 = $3.08

Full power for all 8 hours is the worst case. Wattage per the sources named in each row, rate per the EIA.

How Much Does It Cost to Run a Heated Mattress Pad?

Even the 250 W row costs $0.37 a night. A 120-night winter at 250 W is 240 kWh (250 × 8 × 120 ÷ 1,000), or $43.94 (240 × 0.1831). Target lists no wattage for the Beautyrest pad, so these rows are ranges from the sources named, not a rating for it. For a pad, read the watts on its tag and run the same formula.

This is the cost of warming one bed. If the problem is a whole cold room, our space heaters comparison covers that job.

Are Heated Mattress Pads Safe?

Heated bedding carries a real fire risk when it is old or damaged. ESFI says heating pads and electric blankets cause almost 500 fires a year, and that almost all of those involve blankets more than ten years old.

Follow the manufacturer’s instructions, and look for a UL or ETL listing. On Target’s pages, the Beautyrest pad says “100% UL certified (US standard),” and a Q&A answer on the Serta blanket says it is ETL certified. On an older blanket, check the tag for one of those marks.

ESFI’s checklist is short. Look for dark, charred or frayed spots and a cracked or frayed cord, and replace worn or old bedding. Never fold or tuck in a blanket while it is on. Do not put anything on top of a blanket in use, pets included.

On recalls, I searched CPSC’s recall database on October 18, 2026 for each brand and product here. No entry names the Serta blanket or the Beautyrest pad. The FAQ has the entries that do exist.

Can You Leave a Heated Mattress Pad on All Night?

The makers build for it, and ESFI warns against it, so read your manual. Target lists a 10-hour auto shut-off on the Beautyrest pad and a 1 to 12 hour timer on the Serta blanket. ESFI’s page says heating appliances should never be left unattended or used while sleeping.

The timer length is the maker’s allowance, and ESFI’s line is the stricter of the two. Following ESFI’s line means warming the bed ahead of time and switching the pad off before you sleep. With two controllers on a queen pad, test both sides the first night. Target lists a 90-day return window on the Beautyrest pad.

How Long Do Electric Blankets Last?

No maker gives a lifespan. Target lists a 5-year warranty on both products in the table.

ESFI says almost all of its blanket fires involve blankets more than ten years old, and it says to replace worn or old ones. Note the purchase year somewhere you will see it. Replace the blanket or pad early if the cord frays or a spot darkens.

Frequently Asked Questions About Heated Mattress Pads

Do Heated Mattress Pads Use a Lot of Electricity?

Not much. Target lists no wattage for the Beautyrest pad, so use the watts on your pad’s tag. At 120 watts for 8 hours, that is 0.96 kWh (120 × 8 ÷ 1,000), or $0.18 at 18.31 cents per kilowatt-hour.

Can You Wash a Heated Mattress Pad?

Yes. Target lists the Beautyrest pad as machine washable and safe to tumble dry. Follow the care label for water temperature and drying, and the maker’s instructions for the controller.

What Electric Blankets Are Being Recalled?

CPSC’s database lists several, including Sunbeam queen heated blankets, model 32810027, in March 2023 and JKMAX heated blankets and heating pads on September 17, 2026. I found no recall for the Serta blanket or the Beautyrest pad. Beautyrest’s only heated-bedding entry is a 2007 electric throw, model BST-06-THR, and Serta’s entries are mattresses. Compare the model number on an older blanket’s tag with CPSC’s list before you use it.

Do Electric Blankets Have Auto Shut-Off?

These do. Target lists a 10-hour auto shut-off on the Beautyrest pad and a 1 to 12 hour auto shut-off timer on the Serta blanket, which also lists overheating protection. Check an older blanket’s manual before you count on it switching itself off.
