A corded vacuum is the better buy for carpet, big floors and the lowest five-year cost. The BISSELL CleanView Swivel Pet 3836 and the Shark Navigator Lift-Away Deluxe NV360 never run out of power. The Shark Pet Cordless Stick Vacuum IX141 wins on weight and quick cleanups, then needs a new battery.
I have run both kinds in a tile-floored house in Florida and in a Midwest farmhouse where summer means dust and tracked-in dirt. Spec sheets skip a few things. A cordless gets used more often because it is already within reach. The corded one is what comes out when the job is the whole floor, and it never asks how much battery is left.
Corded vs Cordless Vacuum
Two plug-in uprights and one cordless stick, all sold new in the US today. The IX141 also appears in our look at cordless vacuums under $300, where it sits at the top of that range.
| Model | Type | Price | Weight | Cord or runtime | Warranty |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| BISSELL CleanView Swivel Pet 3836 | Corded upright, bagless | $119.99 at bissell.com | 13 lb | 25-ft cord, no runtime limit | 3 years, limited |
| Shark Navigator Lift-Away Deluxe NV360 | Corded upright | $149.99 at sharkninja.com | 14.42 lb | 25-ft cord, no runtime limit | 5 years, limited |
| Shark Pet Cordless Stick Vacuum IX141 | Cordless stick | $299.99 at sharkninja.com | 10.32 lb | Up to 40 minutes | 5 years, limited |
Bissell’s store and Home Depot both list the 3836 at $119.99, and Shark’s own store lists the NV360 at $149.99 and the IX141 at $299.99. The weights come from Bissell’s spec table and Shark’s product pages. Shark says the IX141’s 40 minutes was measured at the hand vac in standard mode without accessories. With the wand and floor head attached, the figure will be lower.
Cordless vs Corded Vacuum Suction Power
Cordless sticks have closed most of the gap, not all of it. Vacuum Wars scored more than 100 cordless vacuums on carpet deep cleaning and found an average of 93 percent, against about 98 percent for corded models. Consumer Reports says uprights are better at digging deep into carpet fibers.
Vacuum Wars calls the suction figures printed on cordless vacuums “less than useful,” so judge a cordless vacuum on carpet results instead. It also says medium power is enough for most floors. That is where the gap closes: tile and hardwood ask for little, and a battery lasts longest on medium.

A corded vacuum holds the same power for as long as it stays plugged in, so run time never ends a job. The limit is the cord. Both uprights here list 25 feet, which covers one room but not a long hallway without a second outlet.
Corded vs Cordless Vacuum for Pet Hair
Hair pickup is not where these two types split. Consumer Reports runs a pet-hair pickup test on every vacuum it rates. It says models that do well on carpet are also good at pet hair, and so are its top-rated sticks and canisters.
The bin is the difference. Bissell lists a 1-liter dirt tank on the 3836 and ships it with a TurboEraser pet tool. Shark’s page lists the IX141’s XL dust cup at 0.3 quart, about 0.28 liter, so the Bissell holds more than three times as much. A farmhouse in summer fills a small cup fast, and you stop to empty it mid-room.

If you are still weighing body styles for a corded machine, our breakdown of upright vs canister vacuums covers where each one fits.
How Long Does a Cordless Vacuum Battery Last?
Two numbers matter: minutes per charge and years per battery. Vacuum Wars puts official cordless run times at 60 to 70 minutes on low power for good models and about 20 minutes for cheap ones, with an average near 44. Shark’s 40 minutes for the IX141 sits right there.
Years per battery is the one nobody prints. Battery University says makers rate consumer lithium-ion packs for 300 to 500 charge cycles, and about 300 cycles when you drain them fully each time. Three full-battery cleanings a week is 156 cycles a year (3 × 52). That puts the 300-cycle mark at about 1.9 years and the 500-cycle mark at about 3.2 years. So I budget one replacement pack inside five years.
Shark sells a replacement battery for the IX141 at $82.99 on sharkninja.com. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for charging and storage, and look for a UL or ETL listing on any replacement. Vacuum Wars adds that a swappable battery can double your cleaning time if you own two.
How Much Does a Cordless Vacuum Cost?
Buying price is the smaller half. Here is five years of ownership for all three, with the arithmetic in each cell. Prices are the ones in the first table, and the parts prices come from Bissell’s and Shark’s own stores.
| Model | Purchase | Battery, 5 years | Filters, 5 years | 5-year total | Per year |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| BISSELL CleanView Swivel Pet 3836 | $119.99 | None | $15.99 foam filter × 5 = $79.95 | $199.94 | $39.99 |
| Shark Navigator Lift-Away Deluxe NV360 | $149.99 | None | $15.99 foam and felt kit × 5 = $79.95, plus one $41.99 HEPA filter = $121.94 | $271.93 | $54.39 |
| Shark Pet Cordless Stick Vacuum IX141 | $299.99 | One pack at $82.99 | $16.99 pre-motor kit × 5 = $84.95, plus one $16.99 post-motor filter = $101.94 | $484.92 | $96.98 |
Totals add purchase, battery and filters: $119.99 + $79.95 = $199.94, $149.99 + $121.94 = $271.93 and $299.99 + $82.99 + $101.94 = $484.92. Per year divides each total by five. The IX141 costs $284.98 more than the Bissell over those five years, about 2.4 times as much.
The assumptions are mine. I budget one filter set a year for each machine. Shark recommends replacing the NV360’s HEPA filter every 3 years, so it gets one swap, and I gave the IX141’s post-motor filter the same interval. Vacuum Wars says to clean or replace Bissell filters every 3 to 6 months. At two foam filters a year the Bissell total rises to $279.89 (10 × $15.99 + $119.99), still below the IX141. Bissell’s parts page for the 3836 lists the $15.99 foam filter. Electricity is left out.
Our look at what a cordless battery costs over five years runs the same arithmetic on four pricier models. The pattern holds: when the battery is a line item, a corded unit wins on cost.
Are Corded Vacuums Better Than Cordless?
For power and cost, yes. For carrying it up stairs, no. Shark lists the IX141 at 10.32 pounds, which is 2.68 to 4.10 pounds under the corded uprights at 13 and 14.42. Pick a corded vacuum if you have wall-to-wall carpet, a larger floor plan or a tight budget. Pick the cordless stick for stairs, cars and the crumbs under the table.
Plenty of households end up with both: a corded vacuum for the weekly floors and a cordless one for quick pickups. If you only buy one, the corded Bissell or Shark does more for less money. The warranties also favor Shark, at five years on both of its models against Bissell’s three.

Frequently asked questions about cordless vs corded vacuums
Can you replace a cordless vacuum battery?
Often, yes. Shark sells a replacement battery for the IX141 at $82.99 on sharkninja.com and lists the compatible models on the page. Check your model number against that list before you order. Vacuum Wars suggests shopping for a removable battery from the start.
Are cordless vacuums worth it?
Yes, for stairs, quick cleanups and smaller homes. On the numbers above the IX141 costs about $97 a year to own against about $40 for the Bissell and $54 for the Shark Navigator, so you are paying for convenience. It earns that price when you vacuum often and in short bursts.
Do corded vacuums have unlimited runtime?
Yes, while they are plugged in. Power stays the same from start to finish, with no battery to run down. The practical limit is cord length, and both uprights here list 25 feet.
Is a cordless vacuum good enough for carpet?
For light carpet, yes. On deep pile a corded vacuum still leads: Vacuum Wars’ average carpet deep-clean score is 93 percent for cordless and about 98 percent for corded. Max power helps on carpet but drains the battery faster.
