    Buy the Cuisinart CPT-142. It takes this comparison at 67.3 out of 100, and it wins for an unglamorous reason: at $59.95 it is the only 4-slice toaster here whose exact model an independent lab has actually put bread through, and the only one carrying a three-year warranty. The Dualit Classic finishes last at 41.4 despite being the only one built to be repaired, because Dualit’s US store sells no parts at all. Its whole premium rests on a repair path that does not reach American kitchens.

    The ranking falls out of the middle column, and it is not the ranking the prices predict. Cuisinart sells exactly one part for this toaster and its own parts page says so in as many words: showing 1 of 1 parts. Breville has no support page for the BTA840 at all, and the independent parts specialist PartSelect lists two crumb trays for it, at $15.32 and $15.33, plus an instruction book marked no longer available. No elements. No carriage. No lever.

    So on two of these three, the answer to a dead element is a new toaster. That is a legitimate design choice at $59.95. It is a harder one to defend at $249.95.

    What does Dualit’s repair promise cost in America?

    Dualit’s US product page makes the promise in its own words: replaceable parts, and you don’t throw a Dualit toaster away, we repair it for you. The elements carry their own two-year guarantee on top of the toaster’s one year. As a pitch it is the best argument for spending $379.99 on browning bread that anyone has ever made.

    Then you go looking for an element. The US site’s spares collection returns a 404. So does its parts collection. So does the direct product URL for the element itself. The full catalogue on the US store is complete toasters, kettles, coffee pods, a sandwich cage and a warming rack, and there is no spares link anywhere in the navigation. The contact page routes American customers to a distributor’s phone number.

    The parts do exist. On the UK site they are catalogued properly: end element 00456 at £9.99, centre element 00457 at £9.99, timer 01362 at £24.99 and currently out of stock, crumb tray 01111 at £9.95, and an element spanner for a pound. Thirty-seven parts across four pages. That is a genuine repair operation, and it is 3,500 miles away, priced in sterling, and built for 240 volts.

    Two more things before anyone orders one anyway. Dualit’s own spares pages say all servicing, including fitting replacement elements and timers, should be carried out by a qualified electrician, and its support article repeats it. And element ordering by phone is, in Dualit’s wording, UK customers only. So the honest American version of the promise is: a phone call to an importer, a part number you cannot look up, and an electrician’s callout on a toaster.

    One gap I could not close, and it matters if you are tempted. US Dualits run on 120 volts and the UK spares are 240. Third-party listings reference distinct US element part numbers, but I could not find a Dualit-published US element SKU or a dollar price for one anywhere. Do not assume a £9.99 element from Dualit’s British shop fits an American toaster.

    Has anyone tested the 4-slice toaster you would actually buy?

    Toaster reviews have a specific bad habit. An outlet tests the two-slice version of a line, the four-slice version gets cited as though it were covered, and the reader ends up trusting a result that was never produced. It happens on this exact page’s subject matter, and one of these three brands is entirely built on it.

    Consumer Reports does not leave this to inference. On its pages for four-slice Dualits it states in its own words that it expects the model to perform similarly to the tested two-slice version, which is a polite way of saying nobody put bread in this one. Its tested Dualit is the 20293 two-slice.

    So the most expensive toaster on this page, at $379.99, is the one with no independent test of the model you would actually receive. America’s Test Kitchen’s toaster testing, updated April 2026, tested the Cuisinart CPT-142P1 exactly and no Dualit whatsoever. That is not a knock on how the Dualit browns bread. It is the absence of any evidence about how it browns bread.

    Why do two labs disagree about the same $59.95 toaster?

    Because they do, and pretending otherwise would be the easy way out. America’s Test Kitchen put the Cuisinart in its Recommended with Reservations tier and wrote that it “toasted both sandwich bread and bagels unevenly, leaving significant pale spots.” Consumer Reports rates the same model’s colour evenness across a full batch as excellent.

    Owner reports break the tie, and they break it toward the pale spots. Across roughly 1,900 ratings at Walmart and another 1,700 at Target, the two recurring complaints are uneven toasting between slices and a bagel setting that does not confine itself to one side. Walmart’s distribution runs 62 percent five-star with 12 percent at two stars or below. That is aggregated owner reporting from retail listings, with the counts stated, and it is not a measurement.

    Consumer Reports’ own buying guide sets the bar the Cuisinart is being judged against: the best toasters “offer a wide range of browning, from very light to very dark” and “produce consistent color across all slices in a batch.” Seven shade settings buys you the first half. Roughly 3,600 owner ratings and one lab say the second half is where this toaster gives ground.

    The Dualit sits outside that argument for an awkward reason: about 50 US ratings exist for it in total, across three retailers. Too thin to characterise. Anyone quoting Dualit reliability at you, in either direction, is quoting a handful of reviews.

    Does the Dualit really draw 2,200 watts on a US circuit?

    No, and Dualit’s US page says it does. The product listing gives 2.2 kW. A standard American 120-volt, 15-amp kitchen circuit tops out around 1,800 watts before the breaker has an opinion, and Target’s listing for the same toaster says 1,800 W.

    What has happened is obvious once you see it: 2.2 kW is the 230-volt British figure, carried across to the American storefront along with the rest of the copy. Same page, same section, publishes the slot width as 1.18 inches while Target lists 28 millimetres, which is 1.10. Companies don’t exactly lie. They just publish one spec sheet in two countries and hope.

    What does running one cost a year?

    Almost nothing, and that is the useful answer. Assuming two toasting cycles a day at roughly three minutes each — a reasonable household estimate, not a measured usage log, so scale it to your own kitchen — that is 0.1 hours of run time daily, or 36.5 hours a year. At 1,800 watts that is 65.7 kWh. Priced at 19.7 cents per kilowatt-hour — the July 2026 reading of the average US city electricity price series, a Bureau of Labor Statistics figure redistributed by the St. Louis Fed — the year costs $12.94.

    All three toasters land on that same $12.94, because all three draw about 1,800 watts on an American circuit.

    Electricity is therefore not a reason to choose any of these. It is roughly a thirtieth of the gap between the cheapest and the dearest, once, in the first year.

    Which one wins once you score all five?

    Five axes, weighted, each scored 0 to 10. Price is scored by dividing the cheapest toaster’s price by each toaster’s price and multiplying by ten, so the $59.95 Cuisinart scores 10.0 and the $379.99 Dualit scores 1.6 ($59.95 ÷ $379.99 × 10).

    The weights, and where you might reasonably shove them. Parts availability takes 25 percent because it is the only thing that separates a $379.99 toaster from a $59.95 one in principle. Testing and warranty take 20 each because they are what you have instead of holding the machine yourself. Evenness takes 20, and the Dualit’s 5.5 there is a placeholder resting on 50 ratings, which I would rather admit than dress up. Price takes 15.

    Push parts to 40 percent and the Dualit still does not win, because it scores 6.0 rather than 10 on the axis built for it. That is the finding in one line: the only toaster here designed to be repaired is the only one whose maker will not sell you the part in your own country.

    Who should buy the Dualit Classic 4 Slice NewGen?

    Someone who wants a hand-built object in cast aluminium and stainless steel, on a counter they look at every morning, and who is honest with themselves that this is the reason. It is a mechanical timer rather than numbered shades, which takes a few discarded slices to learn and then repeats reliably. One year on the toaster, two on the elements, both confirmed on Dualit’s own US page.

    What Dualit does not publish anywhere I could find: the exclusions on that US guarantee, who pays shipping for warranty service, or what voids it. The US terms page carries a reference to a British consumer statute and no warranty section at all.

    Skip this if you are buying it for the repairability. That is the one claim on the box this page can tell you does not survive contact with an American address.

    Who should buy the Breville Die-Cast BTA840XL?

    Someone who wants Lift and Look and is willing to hunt for stock. Raising the bread mid-cycle to check the colour and lowering it again without resetting the timer is the one feature here that changes a morning, and neither of the others has it. RTINGS named this exact four-slice its top pick for 2026. Owner reports split oddly by retailer: 4.2 across 575 Amazon reviews with evenness contested, against 4.8 across 64 at Best Buy where toast quality is the single most-tagged praise.

    The problem is buying one. Breville’s own page reads out of stock with a notify-me button, at $249.95, and names no successor, and it remains the only four-slice in Breville’s US toaster shop. Amazon has it at $179.95. One retailer lists it as no longer available. Breville also does not publish the wattage, the slot width or the weight, which is why the 1,800 W figure quoted here is credited to retailers rather than to Breville.

    Skip this if you need a toaster this week, or if $190 over the Cuisinart has to come back as something other than a mid-cycle peek.

    Who should buy the Cuisinart CPT-142?

    Most people. $59.95, seven shade settings, bagel, defrost and reheat, 1.5-inch slots, a three-year warranty that is triple anything else here, and the only exact model in this comparison that two independent labs have both put bread through. Cuisinart’s warranty says it will repair or replace at no cost and sends a return label, so the three years are real years.

    It is plastic with steel accents, some owners find the buttons stiff, and unauthorised parts or repairs void the coverage. Note also that the older CPT-142BK without the P1 suffix has a discontinued page on Cuisinart’s site; the P1 versions are the live ones, in white and black, both at $59.95.

    Skip this if even browning across four slices is the thing you care about most. One lab and roughly 3,600 owner ratings say that is where it gives ground, and no amount of shade settings fixes a pale spot.

    Are any of these three under recall?

    No. The only Dualit recall on CPSC record is from December 1994, about 2,700 electronic Dualit-Plus toasters that switched themselves on after a power interruption, six incidents, two involving scorching, no injuries. A different, discontinued, electronic model, thirty-two years ago. No recall found for any Breville toaster or for the Cuisinart CPT-142.

    As with every recall check on this site, that is “no recall found” rather than “no recall exists”: the CPSC search endpoint refuses automated queries, so this came from targeted searching and manufacturer pages.

    Worth repeating whichever one you buy: the NFPA states that cooking fires are the leading cause of home fires and injuries, and that the leading cause of kitchen fires is unattended cooking. Its 2020 report on home cooking fires puts unattended equipment at 31 percent of them, across 2014 to 2018 data. Empty the crumb tray. Stay in the room.

    What should you do before you spend $379.99?

    Try to buy the element. Open the maker’s US store, look for the part, and see whether the thing you are paying a premium for is a product or a paragraph. It took me about four minutes to answer that for all three of these, and it changed the ranking.
