    The rating column: what IEC 60529 numbers certify

    IP ratings come from IEC 60529, an international standard with precisely defined bench tests. Notice the inversion: the only format with crush protection costs less than the wearable one, so you are paying the Panga premium for comfort on your back, not for a stronger seal.

    Matching the format to the trip

    Beach day, paddling, festival, rainy commute with clothes and a towel: roll-top dry bag, and its lack of an IP rating will never matter. Rainy-climate commuting or travel with a laptop you must wear on your back: waterproof backpack, checking whether the specific model claims splash resistance or a real IPX7 test. Camera, drone, lenses, or anything that breaks when dropped: hard case, because it is the only format whose protection extends beyond water.     Can I swim or snorkel with an IPX7-rated bag?

    The rating does not cover it. IPX7 certifies 30 minutes in one meter of still water — swimming adds movement, pressure spikes, and time beyond the test. Some products survive more, as OutdoorGearLab’s 24-hour soak of the YETI Panga showed, but that is the product exceeding its certificate, not the certificate promising it.

    Why don’t roll-top dry bags carry an IP rating?

    Because the folded closure cannot promise immersion performance, and manufacturers know it. Sea to Summit’s guidance says the roll-top supports only modest water pressure and can seep at shallow depth over time, so these bags ship with submersion advisories instead of certificates. They are splash and rain tools — excellent ones.

    What is the difference between IP67 and IPX7?
