What the EPA and CDC actually say

Picaridin needs to hit roughly 20% in spray form to perform well; Consumer Reports found a 5% picaridin product scored among the lowest in its tests. And OLE performed well specifically at the 30% concentration Repel’s formula uses.

That concentration detail is the first thing to check on any bottle, ours included: a “natural” or “DEET-free” label means nothing if the active ingredient sits below the concentration where CDC- and EPA-recognized actives actually work.

The cost-per-hour math the label doesn’t show you

Where it wins. It’s the cheapest option per hour of protection in our math above, it’s sold everywhere from gas stations to sporting goods stores, and 25% DEET is a well-established, extensively studied concentration with decades of use behind it.

The dealbreaker to know before you buy. DEET is a genuine solvent for some plastics, synthetics, and coatings — it can damage watch faces, sunglasses lenses, some rain jackets, and fishing line, a pattern reported consistently enough that most outdoor retailers carry an explicit warning about it. It also has a stronger chemical smell and a greasier feel on skin than the other two options here, and current CPSC and manufacturer guidance still advises against using DEET products on infants under 2 months old.

Buy it if you want the most economical option per hour and don’t mind the smell or the gear precautions. Skip it if you’re spraying near expensive gear, sunglasses, or synthetic fabrics, or you simply prefer a lighter-feeling product.

Sawyer Picaridin: the longest single application

Where it wins. It doesn’t damage plastics, synthetics, or gear the way DEET can, which matters if you’re spraying near a tent, pack, or fishing gear. It’s also nearly odorless and doesn’t leave the greasy film DEET does, and the CDC lists it as safe for children as young as 2 months.

The honest drawback. It costs more per bottle and, by our math above, a touch more per hour than DEET once you account for bottle size — the gap is small, but it’s real. Picaridin can also still irritate skin and eyes on sensitive users, the same caution that applies to any topical repellent.

Repel Lemon Eucalyptus: proven, but shorter-acting

Where it wins. It’s free of synthetic actives for buyers who specifically want that, it won’t damage gear, and unlike citronella candles, wristbands, or unregistered essential-oil blends, it’s actually backed by CDC and EPA recognition rather than just a “natural” label.

The honest drawback. Six hours is half of Sawyer’s claimed window, which means more frequent reapplication on a long day outside, and that shows up directly in the cost-per-hour math above despite the lowest sticker price.
