About Nate Colburn

Quick background on me, since you’re trusting my math.

I played four sports growing up — soccer, baseball, football, basketball. Not all of them well. But box scores were my first spreadsheets, and I never really stopped keeping score of things.

Most of my money over the years has gone into gear. It started with car stereos and speakers, back when you’d argue with your friends about whether the expensive amp actually sounded better or the guy at the store just said it did. Since then it’s been computers, routers, TVs, laptops, tablets, flashlights, stereo receivers and more speakers. I’ve bought the good version and the cheap version of most things at least once and been burned in both directions, which is its own education. Somewhere in there I picked up a college degree, got scuba certified, and saw most of this country the slow way, by road.

The reason this site works the way it does is that I quit trusting spec sheets a long time ago. Companies don’t exactly lie. They just measure things whichever way makes them look best. So we check. The whole process is written up in our editorial standards if you want it.

And if a number on this site is wrong, I want to hear about it. Seriously. The contact page works.
